My final front cover

  • Firstly, for my front cover of my magazine, I used a teenage girl model because this was the target audience and using this model suggested to the audience exactly what style of magazine this was. The colour scheme was then based around this, taking into consideration the types of colours young teenagers are into in this day in age. The ones I chose were lilac, teal and yellow. I used these as they all went well together and were very eye catching too. I then kept this colour scheme consistent throughout which gave the magazine a professional feel about it.
  • I took time to view as many different style models as I could. My favourite was the 'we love pop' style magazine. I used and incorporated different pieces from this magazine into my magazine, for example, the 'we love pop' magazines head line was changed and I turned this into 'we love music' but added my own twist to this by adding font and colours. Secondly, I also took the highlighter from the magazine and added it to mine. Highlighting key words make the audience look right to it. These are usually the important parts of the magazine.
  • The price and barcode both correspond and link with the colour scheme. These are located on the bottom right of my magazine. Many typical magazines use this convention so I decided to give it that look to.
  • My title also includes effects such as a drop shadow and the colour I used behind this lilac was a yellow, again, keeping with the colour scheme in order to make it stand out and engage the reader or buyer when it is on the shelf in a store.

final double page spread.

This is my final double page spread. I have researched questions that an interviewer would tend to ask a female celebrity when in an interview. This gave me an idea of the type of questions I would include in my magazine although I answered them off the top of my head without the internet.

I kept to the theme and same colour scheme as throughout. I even included highlighted parts in my interview as this is a regular theme throughout the 'i love pop' and 'top of the pops' magazines as it highlights the most important or most interesting parts within the magazine itself.

Pre-lim contents page

question 7

7. What do you feel you have learnt in the progression from the preliminary task to the full product?

During the time from when I first created my  prelim magazine cover to my main magazine cover, I have picked up many editing skills along the way. I have studied a variety of magazines that had a large input into helping me create my main magazine cover to this day. I studied magazines such as ‘we love pop’ as pop was my genre of magazine and this helped with the colour scheme and the actual lay out of the page.

In my first magazine cover, I was using very basic text fonts and sizes. The magazine did not really have a colour scheme as I just chose the colours off the top of my head without looking at any magazine. On the other hand, my magazine now has a colour scheme, which I followed. This being red, blue and yellow. The pop magazines that influenced me, all used bright colours and I chose to follow this.

Next thing I learnt was how to use shapes and drag the layers behind each other that enabled me to have a border around multiple images on my main magazine photo. I also learnt how to edit a picture correctly using photo shop that made the picture instantly become more professional. All in all, I have used many more advanced magazine conventions for my main cover and this applies for my other two pages, the contents page and the double page spread.

Similar to my front cover, I have picked up many editing skills involving the use of photo shop compared to my very first pre-lim contents page. Again this had very basic text fonts  and nothing stood out where as to now, I have borders around my images, text is bolder in some parts and some text is even highlighted to be more appealing to the audience. The main contents page is nice and packed with writing, images or information where as before there was a lot of blank space and looked very boring.

question 4

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

My primary target audience is teenage girls who are roughly around the ages of 11-16 years of age because the females are typically the ones who enjoy pop music and songs about relationships and love and usually tend to be able to relate to them. My magazine does not target those of a particular race or ethnicity though. The target audiences interests would be that of the celebrities, pop music, boys and relationships.

When creating my magazine, I was sure to include fun girly colours such as lilac, yellow and teal. These instantly represent the bright side to the music genre 'pop'. These colours also help to attract the audience over any other magazine that they would be looking at on the shelves in store or on the internet.

My images used throughout is a young teenage artist which other teenage girls can relate to instantly. The clothing worn by her also helps the audience recognise who this magazine reaches out to. It was important that the correct clothing was worn and the correct makeup was applied to link with the pop theme. I know this was not a fashion or makeup magazine but it was important that what was worn, was the up to date fashion to this day.

Audience profiles of those who would be interested in my magazine and in the age range of the target audience:

Name:Sophie
Age:14
Hobbies: Singing, dancing, horse riding, the gym and working out, shopping and going to concerts.
Favourite artists: Justin Bieber, One Direction and Beyoncé.

Name: Jasmin
Age: 17
Hobbies: Fashion Design, football, Trampolining, gymnastics, going to the cinema and going clubbing.
Favourite artists: Jason Derulo, Jessie J, Rita Ora, Miley Cyrus.

question 3

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

magazine distribution: The type of company that distributes your magazine tells a lot about the type of product that is it, what values and messages it contains, who the audience is and how important profit is to your product and company. There are two types of distribution networks. These being, 'major' and 'independent'

The top of the pops magazine is published by the BBC and has been since 1928. They allow other people to read their contents across 36 websites, 58 magazine and 70 bands. These are one of the biggest consumers of media in the UK.

We love pop magazine is one of the magazines I also researched a lot and referred back to when creating my magazine. The company that publishes this magazine is Egmont UK Ltd. This is the largest   children's selection of magazine and sells over 12 million magazines a year. This magazine does have a website but does not have a wikipedia page. From previous research I have found that the UK published magazines are decreasing in sales. I have found that top of the pops has decreased by 13.4% and the we love pop has decreased by 10.7%. This just shows me that using distributors such as Egmont and BBC magazines may not make my magazine as successful as it could be.

A possible distributor for my magazine could be Bauer media. This is such a successful institution. They advertise worldwide which would make my magazine well known and I would receive a larger profit. Bauer distributes magazines such as 4music, Kiss and box television which are music channels which are mostly associated with pop music which is the genre of mine. This gives me the impression that this would be the best distribution for me.

Immediate media UK or Egmont UK would have an interest in a magazine such as my own. They both have existing products very similar to mine with the same target audience. Egmont UK however distribute products exclusively to children where as 'we love pop' is their only music magazine that's aimed at teenagers. This may mean they would not have an interest in adding more to this category and wish to stay within mainly distributing to younger children.

question 2

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

  • My magazine represents the music genre 'pop' as it is emphasised through the images and the model I have used through the way the images throughout are dressed and the makeup used. The way my artist is dressed also appeals to my target audience as she is clothed in what many teenagers would consider to be fashionable and wear themselves. This is especially because what she is wearing is colourful and will appeal to young girls.
  • For my magazine, mostly on my double page spread interview, I tried to steer clear of using informal language because I did not want to conform to the stereotype that all teenagers and young children use informal language. With my magazine, the colours used represent that my magazine is aimed at female teenagers and this is shown by the colours such as teal and lilac. I had to use a colour close to pink to provide the audience with the information that this is a girls magazine. I did not want to be stereotypical though so threw some blue in there.
  • On both my front cover and contents pages, I have mentioned the names of popular mainstream artists who will appeal to my young target audience. Names such as Rihanna, Harry Styles, Justin Bieber and Jason Derulo are mentioned and to many teenage girls, this will persuade them to buy the magazine if they are into at least one or two of these popular music artists.
  • Lastly, I have mentioned technologies such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram which I know will appeal to the target audience of my magazine as I know they will be familiar with the social networking sites and many of them will use the sites personally themselves. A huge advantage to those of my target audience is that there is an increasing popularity involving these social networking sites in this age bracket so this is sure to engage to them and raise their interests of the magazine.

Question 1 draft

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I tried to include as many conventions in my magazine as any other music magazine in the media today. Conventions are those such as the masthead, cover Lines, barcode, selling line, main image, exclusive extra, date and serif font.

Firstly, my masthead which I was inspired to use by the 'we <3 pop' magazine was incorporated into my own version. I Continued to use the love heart in between the title 'we <3 music' for mine. I have followed the typical magazine conventions of having the title at the top of the front cover from left to right. Many music magazine readers understand and are able to tell its a music magazine straight by the image because those usually used are the famous celebrity singers or bands. My magazine demonstrates that it is not this that gives away that it's a music magazine yet it is my title. My image also sits behind the masthead which is were I have actually challenged the convention because many well known magazines have their image slightly placed over the masthead. I have not done this though as my magazine is not as well known.

Cover lines also feature on my front cover. These show what is included inside and are some of the main stories involved. These cover lines are also of people featured in the pop music industry and who young teenage girls are well aware of for example 'Harry Styles' and 'Rihanna'. These components are used in order to attract the young female audience with these interests. My cover lines were based either side of my centred picture as this is a common convention used today.

I have added a barcode to my magazine to make it more authentic. I added this to the bottom right of the page including a price to.  By looking at other magazine to, I could also add an issue number and/or date underneath the barcode to include extra detail

Another important convention I used was that of an extra. I included things such as posters inside and the sentence 'EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW'. These two things will make the reader even more intrigued to read inside.

To my magazine, I have added some of the popular Social platforms to my contents page. Things such as twitter, facebook, instagram and an email address. By mentioning the Social Platforms in my magazine I am showing the audience that it's a well known/spoke about magazine. Many magazines are now using New Media to advertise themselves. By having my magazine online allows the audience to view it over these well known websites and gives them a closer insight on what the magazine is all about and means they don't have to go the shop to just view it and buy it.

Mis en scene of the image on my front cover:

Images are a big part of the magazine and which ones I used needed to be used correctly and link with the music genre of my magazine which was pop. The image on the front cover is one of the main things in which help the audience decide whether its their type of magazine style or whether they are just interested in the image it's self to read on.  When researching about magazine front cover images, I found that quite a few of the models were looking straight at the audience which connects with them where as my model is looking in the right direction and away from the audience. I think this gives the impression to the audience that this is a typical teenage girl with attitude and goes with the pull quote which was, 'THE TEARS, FAME & LOVE'.

As I speak about in my next few posts about the target of my audience, my magazine is aimed at teenage girls so I had to choose carefully about what my model was going to wear. As many girls to this day go for the casual jeans look, I decided for this to be the look. These two basic colours worn by the model made it very easy to choose a colour scheme which helped compliment and blend the colours all together and work well. When I first took the photograph, the image was quite dull so with the help of photo shop and the skills I had, I knew how to improve the quality of this image and that's what I done.

When using text, I chose carefully on what to use as I didn't want to use a text with really sharp edges or too bubbly as this made the music genres change from something which was not pop. The text I used throughout was 'cooper sans' and 'century gothic'. Both of which are very simply texts but are both effective. I decided to stick to these texts throughout the whole magazine and did not go over board with them.

The last thing I had to think about was the whole layout of my magazine. This will either make or break your magazine. I followed the magazines such as 'billboard' and 'top of the pops' to help create the image and layout of mine. My front cover is very similar to this image below. My model is standing centrally and has writing to the left and right of her. The only thing different really is that my barcode is on the right side instead of the left. I added in more conventions that this magazine did not use. One of them was the banner at the bottom of my page with free posters included.

I done another photo shoot of the same model I had used throughout. I done this so I had more images to work with. I also done this because I needed at least 5 images of the model herself. I ended up using 1 photo of this model on my homepage, 4 on the contents page and 1 on my double page spread. Below are more images I took in order to give me a wider variety of images to select and edit from.
